All of us here at Surry Cottage Books got into the publishing business because we love books. We love making them, reading them and looking at them. We like the way they feel, the way they smell and how they look.
Ebooks, of course, have none of that. They are just a bunch of code and don't really exist at all in the real world. But we are smart enough to see that they are the wave of the future. They are cheap to produce and cheap to buy, creating a drastic cost reduction across the board. They are easy to carry around and quick to produce. And you can update them any time you want. And someday they will be attractive to read. That day is really not here yet, but in the meantime we are offering this service to our readers.
We have attended numerous workshops and while no one agrees on exactly the right way to create ebooks, we have a way that works to get your manuscript out there in the world where anyone can buy it. This entire area is changing rapidly and our goal is to stay on top of it.
Q. What files do you need from the author?
A. We can work with any kind of digital file: Microsoft Word, PDF or InDesign. We can even start with a printed book, scan it and turn it into an ebook file.
Q. How long does it take?
A. A simple text-only book such as a novel or a memoir can be converted in just an hour or two! Photos and charts add another level of complexity. SInce ebooks have no real pages, it takes some work to get illustrations to work properly. If you want interactive features like video and audio it could take even longer.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. A simple text-based book can be produced for between $100 and $250. A book with lots of photos could cost $500. In either case, it costs a lot less to produce an ebook than a print book. Come in and show us your book and we will give you a free writen estimate.
Q. What kinds of formats do you use?
A. Amazon Kindle's mobi is by far the most popular, and the one we would recommend, but we can do any format you want. There's no reason not to put the book into as many formats as possible.
Q. Once you make the file, how do I get it onto Amazon?
A. This is really not difficult and takes just a few minutes. We would prefer that authors set up their own accounts, but if this is not possible, we can set it up for you and let Amazon pay you directly.
